The applicants must be participating in any of the government assistance programs like Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamps), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Medicaid, National School Lunch Program’s Free Lunch Program, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). Under the Lifeline free government cell phone plan, people who qualify are allowed to receive a government subsidy, which pays for your free minutes each month. This cell phone service is usually free except for some nominal costs in some states. Residents of Texas have to pay a $30 activation fee and the residents of Oklahoma have to pay $1 per month but then receive 1000 minutes of service per month.
